Stress, Work, Health and Recovery is a leading research area at Stockholm University and part of the Faculty of Social Sciences. Through basic and applied research, working across disciplinary and methodological boundaries, the Stress Research Institute studies how individuals and groups are affected by different social environments with particular emphasis on the impacts to health and stress.

New research has found that around one in four British retirees return to paid work or “unretire”, mostly within five years of retiring. Dr Loretta Platts at the Stress Research Institute is involved in this new study.

Volunteering might reduce the chance of developing dementia

Individuals who decide to retire from the workforce, but start to volunteer instead, report substantially less cognitive complaints and are far less likely to be diagnosed with dementia compared to retired workers who do not volunteer.
