Causes, mechanisms and effects of stress

Stress, burnout and sleep
The present two studies show that moderate increases in stress/worries at bedtime are associated with moderately impaired sleep. It also shows that recovery from burnout is associated with reduced fatigue and reduced sleep fragmentation.
Stress, burnout and sleep (278 Kb)

Playing a violent television game affects heart rate variability
Violent gaming induces different autonomic responses in
boys than non-violent gaming – during playing and during the following
night – suggesting different emotional responses.
Playing a violent television game affects heart rate variability (957 Kb)

Sleep, fatigue and recovery

Sleep during days with work stress compared to weekend sleep
The weekend sleep is longer and contains more slow-wave sleep even in the first part of the sleep.
Sleep during days with work stress compared to weekend sleep (311 Kb)

The longitudinal day-to-day prediction of sleepiness from the day-to-day variation in prior sleep
The daily variation in reported sleepiness is mainly determined by the duration of prior sleep and by illness.
The longitudinal day-to-day prediction of sleepiness from the day-to-day variation in prior sleep (145 Kb)

Full spectrum lights promote alertness and sleep in adolescents
Positive effects of artifi cial full spectrum lights could be observed on sleep efficiency, alertness levels and melatonin levels suggesting that a change of ”classroom lighting” should be considered especially during the dark season.
Full spectrum lights promote alertness and sleep in adolescents (79 Kb)

Decreased alpha-theta power and increased variability in sleepy drivers on real road
EEG power spectrum density during real road driving show large individual differences.
Decreased alpha-theta power and increased variability in sleepy drivers on real road (552 Kb)

First night effect and burnout
The first night in a laboratory seems to have a positive effect on sleep fragmentation in burnout patients. This could be a result of sleeping in a new environment not associated with their normal sleep habits.
First night effect and burnout (298 Kb) Stress vulnerability and the effects of moderate daily stress on sleep polysomnography and subjective ratings
Moderate daily stress is associated with moderately impaired sleep physiology and subjectively impaired cognitive functions.
Stress vulnerability and the effects of moderate daily stress on sleep polysomnography (284 Kb)

Predicting day-to-day variation in sleep duration and and sleep quality
Sleep duration is closely related to the working week / weekend, stress and alcohol. Sleep quality is also closely related to stress/worries at bedtime, but apparently a late awakening may improve the perception of sleep quality somewhat.
Predicting day-to-day variation in sleep duration and and sleep quality (110 Kb)

Adaption to sleep restriction: changes in prolactin and thyrotropin
The data indicates that thyrotropin and prolactin are regulated by highly dynamic systems with the likely intention to retain the homeostasis of metabolism at general as well as cellular levels.
Adaption to sleep restriction: changes in prolactin and thyrotropin (246 Kb)

Working hours, shift work and fatigue

Subjective and objective sleepiness in a simulated 4 hours on/8 hours off maritime watch system
Sleepiness and alertness peaks at certain times of the day. Low demanding paper work increases sleepiness.
Subjective and objective sleepiness in a simulated 4 hours on/8 hours off maritime watch system (366 Kb)

What aspects of shift work cause most problems and are most prevalent – a national representative sample
Short forward planning, split duty, and short time off between shifts were the main factors constituting work hour problems. Night work or morning work appears to be of less widespread importance.
What aspects of shift work cause most problems and are most prevalent (171 Kb)

Weekly school time is associated with sociodemographic, lifestyle and sleep-wake variables among working college students
The combined effects of long work hours (>40h/week) and reduced sleep length might affect working college students lifestyles and academic performance.
Weekly school time is associated with sociodemographic, lifestyle and sleep-wake variables (186 Kb)

Effects of music and open window as countermeasures to driver sleepiness during day and night driving on real roads
Sleepiness is a major risk factor for road accidents. Listening to music and opening the window are among the most popular countermeasures. The study showed that these countermeasures had significant, but only minor and transient effects in counteracting driver sleepiness.
Effects of music and open window as countermeasures to driver sleepiness (154 Kb)

Subjective sleepiness, individual differences and daytime work
Excessive daytime sleepiness was associated with low age, being female, having high education, and sleep complaints, which removed the effects of working times, health, and stress.
Subjective sleepiness, individual differences and daytime work (197 Kb)

Promoting alertness and sleep by dynamic lights for control room operators
The study shows that appropriate dynamic light in windowless rooms during the dark Nordic season may promote alertness, sleep and better adaptation to quickly rotating shiftwork.
Promoting alertness and sleep by dynamic lights for control room operators (1038 Kb)

Night driving, sleepiness and drivning safety
The risk for a car accident is about 6 times higher at the late night hours (04.00h) compared to daytime. Thus, driving at night is a strong risk factor for sleep-related car accidents.
Night driving, sleepiness and drivning safety (205 Kb)

Prevention and treatment of stress and sleeping problems

The Swedish Association for Contemplation in Education and Research
A collaboration with researchers from various faculties using meditation as contemplative inquiry on research questions. Participants have been able to apply their meditative experiences directly to their ongoing research projects. Subjective or first-person reports show increased insight after meditation.

Effect of stress management programme for employees on long-term sick leave
Adding a group intervention aimed at coping with psychological/somatic symptoms of stress to a company health center’s regular treatment had more beneficial effects in alleviating symptoms of burnout, and facilitating return to work, than treatment as usual. Results concerning physiological variables were not equally evident.
